There are constantly articles about identity theft, whether through the loss of a wallet, a computer or hard drive with information on it, dumpster diving, or any other method… What have been lacking are some good step-by-step guides for what to do if your identity is stolen.

Lifehacker just linked to an article on the Credit Score Tips & Advice blog called 8 Things You Must Do If Your Identity Is Stolen

Identity theft doesn’t have to ruin your life or your credit. By staying calm, getting organized, and taking these crucial steps, you can bounce back from this stressful situation and stop thieves dead in their tracks.

I think this is a pretty darn good starting point, and probably should be copied on the FTC website.

There is so much more to identity theft than credit card fraud. It is the fastest growing crime in America. As long as we are identified by our Social Security numbers, this will not stop.

There are many more ways to protective ourselves than the article mentioned, but there is no product that will keep a thief from stealing identities.

Kroll Background America searches DMV records, National and Local data bases, county records and banking activity reported as fraudulent with your name attached to it, in addition to continuous credit monitoring. Also they have a contract with the United States Postal Service and download unknown addresses affiliated with your name nightly. If your ID is stolen and used for ID Theft, Kroll’s Licensed Investigators do all the work to fix the problem. All you have to do is fill out a Police report and send Kroll a limited Power of Attorney. It is sold through Pre-Paid Legal Services as the Identity Theft Shield.
