Don’t forget to secure your gaming consoles
We’ve ranted a lot about protecting important data on your laptops through forms of encryption, we’ve advised on how to help physically secure your laptop, and we’ve talked about privacy when using online retailers. But have you ever considered all these factors could just as easily apply to your gaming consoles as well.
Most importantly would be, protecting your personal information, especially credit card information. With the rise of online gaming throughout all of the major console players, more and more people are releasing their credit card information to these companies, and not thinking twice about it. The Xbox360 for example actually stores your credit card as part of your gamer tag, and most people who own these consoles usually enable auto-login for their specific gamer tag.
In the event of a console theft, the last thing you are probably going to think about is canceling your credit cards. But don’t be surprised if next month you have hundreds of dollars racked up in game or point purchases.
My advice, don’t use your credit card for online gaming! Purchase gamer cards at your local game or retail shop. I’ve even found you can usually find cheaper gamer cards online, making it a smarter deal anyways.
